Rockwood is located in southwest Roane County, which is in East Tennessee. Rockwood has a population of approximately 5800 people. Rockwood High School is located at 512 West Rockwood St. Our school has an approximate enrollment of 460 students, plus twenty-six teachers, a resource officer, and fifteen support staff. We are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Our school hosts grades nine through twelve. We have a gymnasium, a library, two computer labs, a cafeteria, two science labs, consumer science, a band room, and a football field, with a field house.
Ridgeview Elementary School and Rockwood Middle School feed into our high school. We are one of five high schools in the Roane County School System. The other high schools are as follows: Oliver Springs High School, Midway High School, Harriman High School, and Roane County High School.
The very first Rockwood High School graduating class was in the year 1892, with seven graduating students.
Above are the members of the first graduating class. Seated left to right: Robbie Mary Kendrick, Professor Lucas, Rebecca Sanborn, and Alice Clack. Standing, left to right: Carrie Wilson, Robert H. Wilson, Charles Millican, and Bell Wilson.
Rockwood High School started their sports with football, which started in the year 1921. The RHS football players were only provided jerseys, stockings, and pants. They had to furnish themselves with shoes and pads, if any. We beat Harriman 69-0. The colors of the school were orange and black, thus "tigers", until 1950 when we changed our colors to green and white, but keeping the nickname, the "tigers". The local football field, now known as Civitan Field, was the first school owned field.
Basketball in Rockwood High didn't catch the eye until about 1950. That is when the boys and girls basketball team started playing in the gym. The Rockwood High School boys basketball team, in the years 1964-1966, won more runner-up trophies than any other teams in the history of the school.
The oldest baseball team known to us is "Rockwood's 'Socktown Ball Team' of 1908-1909". This ball team was very hard to beat on the baseball diamond. The teams they played and how many games they won or lost is unknown to us.
